Waterbury, VT – The Vermont Department of Corrections (DOC) today announced the death of William Barrett, a detainee at Southern State Correctional Facility (SSCF).
William Barrett, 63, of Brattleboro, Vermont, was lodged at SSCF on March 13, 2024. On January 23, a correctional officer found him unresponsive in his cell. The officer notified medical staff and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and immediately began initiating life-saving measures. Life-saving measures were unsuccessful, and EMS pronounced Mr. Barrett deceased.
Mr. Barrett’s death does not appear suspicious at this time. The Department notified the Defender General’s Prisoners’ Rights Office and Vermont State Police of the death per state law and protocol. The DOC Corrections Investigative Unit will review the fatality according to departmental policy.
