Testing Reveals 45 COVID-Positive Incarcerated Individuals at Springfield Facility

Waterbury, VT – Southern State Correctional Facility (SSCF) in Springfield is on full lockdown following the receipt of 45 new COVID-19 positive test results from the incarcerated population across eight different general population units.

The new cases were detected in testing conducted February 18. None of the positive individuals are presenting with serious symptoms. There are no positive cases in the facility’s geriatric population.

Vermont DOC and Vermont Department of Health are coordinating on follow-up testing. Staffing levels are stable at SSCF, but Vermont DOC is prepared to implement its emergency staffing plan, should it become necessary.

As of Sunday morning, 102 incarcerated individuals were considered positive across five Vermont facilities. Statewide, 33 staff were considered positive across five correctional facilities, three field offices, and Central Office.

Families and friends of incarcerated individuals are encouraged to reach out to the Vermont DOC Office of Constituency Services with questions: https://doc.vermont.gov/information-inmate-families-and-friends. Click here for the direct link to the online Friends and Family portal.
