Waterbury, VT – The Vermont Department of Corrections (DOC) is conducting internal administrative and medical reviews following the death of an incarcerated individual on Tuesday.
Alexander Kelley, 34, of Putney, Vt., was found unresponsive in his cell at SSCF in Springfield at approximately 1:08 AM Tuesday. Vermont DOC and medical staff immediately began life-saving measures and called for emergency medical services (EMS). Life-saving efforts were unsuccessful; EMS pronounced Mr. Kelley dead approximately 40 minutes later. The official cause of death will be determined by the Vermont State Medical Examiner but is not considered suspicious at this time.
Vermont DOC notified Vermont State Police and the Defender General’s Prisoners’ Rights Office of the death per state law and protocol. These entities will conduct separate investigations into the death in conjunction with the Vermont DOC’s administrative and medical reviews. The Vermont DOC Peer Support Team is available for SSCF staff.
Mr. Kelley was lodged at SSCF on March 1, 2023, on a charge of Fugitive from Justice.
