Vermont DOC Reports Death of Supervised Individual in Burlington

Waterbury, VT – The Vermont Department of Corrections (DOC) today announced the death of Robert Brown, an individual supervised in the community on medical furlough.

Robert Brown, 52, of Johnson, Vermont, was lodged at the Northeast Correctional Complex (NECC) in St. Johnsbury from November 8, 2023, until February 27, 2024.

On February 27, Mr. Brown was transported by ambulance to Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital. Following his admission, DOC authorized release of Mr. Brown on medical furlough due to his worsening medical state and low risk to public safety. He was transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC) on February 29 for higher acuity medical care. He died at UVMMC in Burlington on March 5, 2024.

Mr. Brown’s death does not appear suspicious at this time. The Department notified the Defender General’s Prisoners’ Rights Office of the death per state law and protocol. The DOC Corrections Investigative Unit will also conduct a comprehensive administrative review according to departmental policy.

Mr. Brown was in custody since November 8, 2023, on a sentence of nine months to three years on charges including DUI No. 4, operating a vehicle while license suspended, leaving the scene of a crash, unlawful trespass, violation of conditions of release, and providing false information to law enforcement.
