Department internal reviews are conducted by the Corrections Investigative Unit (CIU), a Unit codified by the Vermont General Assembly in 2021. Once passed in statute, Department leadership worked to design this team to meet the needs of staff and align this team’s role with our Vision, Mission, and Values. CIU became fully operational in Spring, 2024. CIU is charged with investigating critical incidents (e.g., deaths in custody, escape attempts, etc.), Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) compliance, threats and safety matters, intelligence operations, and culture and workplace experiences. CIU does not conduct misconduct investigations.
