Waterbury, VT – The Vermont Department of Corrections (DOC) today announced the death of James Ingerson, a sentenced individual incarcerated at Northern State Correctional Facility (NSCF) in Newport, Vermont.
James Ingerson, 54, of Hartford, Vermont, was lodged at Northwest State Correctional Facility on February 3, 2025. Mr. Ingerson was serving both federal and state sentences and was lodged in a federal facility prior to returning to Vermont. He was transferred to NSCF on March 7, 2025, and remained there until his death.
On April 5, a correctional officer found Mr. Ingerson unresponsive in his cell. The officer notified medical staff and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and immediately began initiating life-saving measures. Life-saving measures were unsuccessful, and EMS pronounced Mr. Ingerson deceased.
Mr. Ingerson’s death does not appear suspicious at this time. The Department notified the Defender General’s Prisoners’ Rights Office and Vermont State Police of the death per state law and protocol. The DOC Corrections Investigative Unit will review the fatality according to departmental policy.
