Vermont Correctional Academy

Welcome to the Vermont Correctional Academy home page. The Academy was established in the Fall of 1993 with the first class graduating on October 1st of that year. Our current program is 8 weeks long.  The first week of the course is on site at the trainee's local correctional facility observing the duties and role of a correctional officer. The next five weeks of instruction is at the Vermont Department of Corrections' Training Center in Waterbury, learning the core skill sets of a corrections professional. After graduation the new correctional officer participates in eighty hours of on site training supervised by staff at their new facility.

You can see the current home of the Vermont Correctional Academy in the Dale building in Waterbury's Vermont State Office Complex.  We are part of the Vermont Department of Corrections' Training Center located on the 2nd and 3rd Floors of the Dale Building.  This building was previously the Dale State Correctional Faclity for woman and was re-opened as our training center in July of 2009.

This same Building Complex houses The Vermont Department of Corrections' Central Office staff and the Agency of Human services.  We are right next to and over part of the Vermont State Hospital.

 Our Mission

The Vermont Correctional Academy is vital to the Department’s statutory mandate to establish training programs for new employees and to establish such in-service training programs as deemed advisable.

As an Academy we are responsible for developing training curriculum that will produce highly trained, professional, and competent staff throughout the department. To maintain a standard of excellence the Academy is dedicated to the development of curriculum and department furnished instructors.  Academy curriculum is regularly reviewed, updated and revised to meet the needs of today’s corrections professional.

The Academy will prepare new staff for success in the corrections profession; enhance the knowledge, skills, and abilities of experienced staff and maintain a high standard of professionalism.
